Core Framework
Sexual Abuse
This self-paced e-learning module was created for all healthcare providers on the “front lines” who treat children for a variety of illnesses and injuries. The Physical Abuse Series will help you and your entire team know “when to worry, and what to do.”
The organization of the Physical Abuse Series: Core Framework module parallels the clinical presentation, progressing from broad categories of presenting complaints that may encompass abuse (recognition of “red flags”), to responding with discerning questions that determine next steps, conducting an age- and injury-specific evaluation including diagnostic tests, documenting the findings, and analyzing the facts to determine the likelihood of abuse, as well as the need for reporting, and additional steps that could further clarify the diagnosis.
Mimics
Sexual Abuse
The Physical Abuse Series: Mimics e-learning module asks you to pause and consider other mechanisms that may look like abuse. This case-based learning module provides an overview of cutaneous, bone, and intracranial findings that either look like trauma but are not, or are caused by trauma that is not abusive. Extending from Physical Abuse Series: Core Framework which outlines “when to worry,” this module encourages the learner to “think common, remember rare” in carefully considering the differential diagnosis. Used together, they provide a valuable resource for frontline providers and child abuse specialists alike.
Sentinel Injuries
Sexual Abuse
The Physical Abuse Series: Sentinel Injuries e-learning module asks you to recognize and respond to an unexpected, medically minor injury in a pre-cruising infant. Sentinel injuries are visible to caregivers and often considered “minor" because they typically heal quickly without medical care. However, these injuries often precede further injury or abuse so warrant urgent, careful evaluation.
Abusive Head Trauma
Sexual Abuse
Infants and children who are eventually diagnosed with abusive head trauma may present clinically in a variety of ways, ranging from no symptoms to fatality or near-fatality. In the Physical Abuse Series: Abusive Head Trauma e-learning module you will learn about the most common findings in Abusive Head Trauma, how to recognize it from historical and physical findings, the mechanisms and timing of injuries, and how to distinguish it from other forms of head injury.
