Amy R. Gavril, MD, MSCI

Dr. Amy R. Gavril, Captain, Medical Corps, United States Navy, is a board-certified physician in both general pediatrics and child abuse pediatrics. She is the senior uniformed medical consultant for child abuse and neglect in the Department of Defense (DoD). CAPT Gavril is assigned to the Armed Forces Center for Child Protection (AFCCP), the only child protection center and fully equipped medical consultative service in the military, located at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. CAPT Gavril is the AFCCP Director of Education and Training; in this role she develops and teaches child maltreatment curriculum to residents and medical students who rotate through her center, and organizes multi-day, multi-track child maltreatment conferences which are taught throughout the Department of Defense. CAPT Gavril has extensive experience and training in the field of child physical and sexual abuse, child neglect, child fatalities, child trafficking, and other child exploitation, as well as pediatric and adolescent gynecology. CAPT Gavril is an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at the F. Edward Hebert School of Medicine, at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, Maryland. She is also the expert consultant for the State Department (DoS) when suspected child abuse cases arise at embassies or among DoS employees.

CAPT Gavril regularly lectures to multidisciplinary agencies including physicians, residents, interns, medical students, nurses, and other allied health professionals, lawyers, social workers, criminal investigators, dentists, chaplains, victim advocates, and line officers. She interviews and examines children who are suspected to have been maltreated worldwide throughout the DoD. CAPT Gavril serves as a consultant to social services, medical, legal, and investigative agencies within the DoD, DoS, and the civilian community for cases of suspected child maltreatment, including medical-legal case reviews, expert consultation and testimony, training, and education. She regularly testifies as an expert witness in criminal cases and military courts-martial. CAPT Gavril has multiple publications on child maltreatment in internationally known medical journals and publishers such as Pediatrics, American Academy of Pediatrics, Child Abuse and Neglect, and British Medical Journal. Currently, CAPT Gavril is an Executive Committee Member, Council for Child Abuse and Neglect, within the American Academy of Pediatrics where she works on developing policy, clinical reports, and clinical guidelines for the American Academy of Pediatrics and is Editor-in-Chief of the AAP Council for Child Abuse and Neglect Newsletter.

Dr. Gavril is a native of New Hampshire. She lives in Maryland with her husband and two children.
